What is Sarcoma?
Sarcoma is the cancerous tumor of the connective tissues and is classified into two main categories.
- Soft Tissue Sarcoma (STS) : A rare form of cancer, Soft Tissue Sarcoma can occur in the muscles, fat, fibrous tissues and synovial tissues (tissues around joints), blood vessels, and tendons.
- Bone Sarcoma : Bone Sarcoma or Bone Cancer starts within the bone and could also spread to other parts of the body.
Risk Factors attached to Sarcoma
- Therapeutic radiation which is used for the treatment of cancer.
- Exposure to environmental radiation like radon gas.
- Genetic conditions like Neurofibromatosis, Li-Fraumeni syndrome and Retinoblastoma
- Chemicals like Vinyl Chloride used mostly in the plastic industry.
- Injuries: Many people with bone cancer encountered bone injuries during some time of their life.
- Paget Disease: A benign (non-cancerous) but pre-cancerous condition that affects one or more bones.
Symptoms of Sarcoma
- Pain in the affected bone is the most common complaint of patients with sarcoma.
- Cancers in the bones of the neck can cause a lump in the back of the throat that can lead to trouble swallowing or make it hard to breathe.
- Frequent bone fractures.
- Cancer in the bones of the spine can press nerves, leading to numbness and tingling or even weakness.
