Chronic leukaemia is the condition in the body when abnormal white blood cells fail to die and accumulate in the blood stream, bone marrow and related organs.

What is the cause for developing Leukaemia?

There are several factors that can contribute to development of cancerous growth in body like Leukaemia. It could be a genetic disposition affecting the family. Exposure to high intensity radiation is a known factor. Benzene is a known carcinogen. It is also researched that Human T-Cell Leukaemia virus may be a cause as well.

Certain different forms of Leukaemia are:

  • Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) - associated with children but which also develops in adults.

  • Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) - characterised by an overproduction of immature white blood cells, called myoblasts or leukemic blasts.

  • Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) - is a type of slow growing leukaemia that affects developing B-lymphocytes, also known as B-cells, which are specialised white blood cells.

  • Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) - is a rare blood cancer. It is distinctive in that it occurs due to a genetic mutation.

  • Biphenotypic acute leukaemia (BAL) is an amalgamation of acute leukaemia, acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) and acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL).
