Practicing good oral hygiene is a good start in order to keep oral cancer at bay. But unfortunately, there is a relatively low awareness about these cancers - including how to prevent and recognize them. Maintaining good oral hygiene is one of the most important things you can do for your teeth and gums not only to prevent cancer but also for your overall health. It may not 100% prevent oral cancer, but it does reduces the likelihood.
However, the good news is that even at later stages, these cancers are very treatable. With the current advancements in oral cancer treatment, the survival rates have improved significantly. In fact, some oropharynx cancers have been found to have survival rates of 80 to 90% at three years. And many others oropharyngeal cancers and cavity can be prevented altogether with sensible self-care and healthy lifestyle choices.
Symptoms of oral cancer
According to cancer care centers, the warning signs of mouth and throat cancers include the following:
- Mouth sores in the mouth which do not heal.
- Numbness in the lower lip and chin.
- Continuous earaches in both ears.
- Bleeding in the mouth which lasts for more than a week.
- Slow-growing lumps in the mouth or neck.
- Pain in the mouth lasting for more than two weeks.
- Dramatic voice changes, especially in smokers
Prevention Techniques
Eliminate tobacco: The best cancer hospital in India says the longer you have used tobacco and more frequently you use it, the more the risk of head and neck cancers. Both smoking and smokeless tobacco play a direct role in developing these cancers.
Limit alcohol intake: With smoking, the longer you use alcohol and the amount you drink, the more the risk goes up. This is because alcohol plays a role in changing the body’s chemistry to break down the defenses against cancer. People consuming more than 3.5 alcoholic drinks per day increases the risk of oral cavity cancers.
Visit the dentist regularly: Your dentist is usually the first to notice cancerous growths. The best cancer hospital in Bangalore and all over India say that if cancer is diagnosed at an initial stage, there is a very high chance to treat cancer successfully.
Get vaccinated for HPV: HPV is strongly associated with oral cancers. The best way to prevent is getting vaccinated before you become sexually active and thereby, practice safe sex.
Protect your lips from the sun: Lip cancer is directly related to UV rays. In addition to limiting the sun exposure, wear a protective lip balm. If you witness any signs, visit your doctor as soon as possible. The earlier it's diagnosed, the better the chances one can successfully treat it.
