Know what differentiates Cancer Cells from Normal Cells

There exists a number of differences between cancer cells and normal cells. While many of them are already known, many of them have been recently discovered. Listed below are 10 major points that differentiates normal cells from cancer cells.

Reproduction: Normal cells stop reproducing if enough cells have been reproduced. For instance, if there is a cut, normal cells will reproduce till they fill that cut. Cancer cells, on the other hand, never stops growing. This continued formation of the cells leads to a tumor.

No response: Normal cells when they get a signal from other cells to stop growing, they obey the command. Cancer cells don't respond to any such signal from other cells.

Repair: Normal cells either undergo a repair or die when they are damaged. Repair (or death) is  not an option for cancer cells.

How do they look?: There is a variation in the size of cancer cells when looked under the microscope. It could be either bigger or smaller than the size of the normal cells. Also, the nucleus of the cancer cells appears darker and larger.

Bonding: Normal cells emit a substance that binds them together. Cancer cells don't produce this substance and hence, there is a risk of them floating away in other parts of the body.

Maturity: Normal cells mature while cancer cells divide rapidly before their maturity.

Exiting the Immune System: Normal cells are boycotted by the immune system when they get damaged beyond repair while cancer cells trick the immune system, thus forming a tumor.

Function: Normal cells perform the functions they are supposed to while cancer cells are not at all functional.

Power Source: Normal cells obtain their power in the presence of oxygen while cancer cells do it in its absence.

DNA Number: Normal cells have normal DNA as well as chromosome. On the other hand, cancer cells have an abnormal no. of both of them.
