What is Quackery?

Quackery is promoting medical practices in a fraud or ignorant manner. Therefore, a "quack" is a person who ignorantly or fraudulently pretends, professionally or publicly, to have expertise, knowledge, skill or qualifications in medical practices but in reality he or she does not possess it.

Quackery generally includes diagnoses which are questionable. These diagnoses are carried out using tests and techniques which are again dubious. Quacks use doubtful alternatives and refuted treatments for diagnosing serious diseases such as cancer.

What are the harms which are linked with Quackery?

·         Monetary Harm: A quackmay take undue advantage of a cancer patient and dig a big hole in his pocket under the name of treatment. Resultantly, the cancer patient might end up losing money with no effective treatment.

·         Direct harm to the body: Doubtful treatment by quackery could lead to major complications in the body like unnecessary suffering, brain damage and disfigurement.

·         Indirect harm to the body: Depending on quackery for treatment or undergoing self-treatment could lead to catastrophic consequences like needless or premature death, delay in proper care, increase in side effects etc.

·         Emotional Harm: A cancer patient might live with guilt in case he opts for wrong treatment option. Other than that the patient and even his loved ones might develop in them an anti-social behavior and even if the cancer patient dies, their loved one consider the quackery to be an effective treatment.

·         Harm to the entire community: There might increase unawareness about cancer in the people of the society. People might hold a wrong belief about cancer and consider quackery as an effective treatment option.

What is the solution?

To cope with quackery, facts and awareness about cancer should be taught to the people and explain them the results of going with the quackery. Also, a scientific approach is required to deal with it. As a matter of fact there are certain cancers that take a very long time to show their effects on the body or produce no symptoms at all for a long period of time. This makes the people believe that quack treatment has cured them but all we need is a rational approach towards teaching these facts to the people.
