What are the late effects of Childhood Cancer?

Late Effects of Childhood Cancer could occur months or even years after cancer has been treated. Some of these effects are:

• Cognitive Impairments (Problems in Learning)
• Memory and Focusing Problem
• Poor Coordination between hands and eyes
• Poor Vision
• Dry (or Watery Eyes)
• Ringing in the Ears
• Bone Pain and Weak Bones

What causes these late effects among children?

The late effects are the result of radiation therapies. These therapies along with busting cancer cells, also damage some of the healthy cells of the body.

• Dose of the Radiation: Higher the dose, higher are the risks of late effects
• The specific body part: The body part exposed to the radiation is more likely to be affected.
• Child’s Age: Young age is more sensitive to radiations.
• Surgery: Some tumor cells are often taken out of the body with surgery. If it is performed on younger children, whose bodies are still growing, then it might result in late effects afterwards.

Though experts keep an eye on any side effects but the parents too should watch for any late effects. In case, if they observe any signs in their child like pain in a specific part, tiredness, anxiety, etc., they should consult the cancer specialist immediately.
