According to reports, breast cancer is the second most common cancer in the world and by far the most common cancer amongst women. Many women fail to perform regular breast-self examination (BSE). The reasons for the low rate of BSE include the fear of detection of breast cancer, insufficient knowledge regarding the procedure for BSE, and lack of awareness about what to do in case of a lump. Regular screening can help detect abnormal cells in the nascent stages and increase the chances of survival with proper breast cancer cure. The best breast cancer hospitals list down some possible symptoms of the disease:

Check for a lump: The first sign of breast cancer most women notice is a lump or an area of thickened tissue in their breast. This new area of thickened tissue which was not present before can be a sign of breast cancer. In addition to this, the breast tissue is also found under the armpit and near the collarbone. Make sure you check the above stated areas for lumps.

Changes in the nipples: All women have different nipples, and most nipple changes are nothing to worry about. However, you should still be careful with any changes to the shape, size, or color of the nipples and report them to the doctor. The best breast cancer hospitals say that one sign of breast cancer is that your nipples push in towards your body rather than pointing out. Such nipples are inverted or retracted. Changes in the texture, color, or itchy rashes might also be signs of cancer.

Changes in breast shape and size: This may occur due to periods, pregnancy, sexual arousal, or anything else which may cause a shift in the hormones. But if this isn’t normal, you can do yourself a favour by checking it and catching breast cancer in the earliest stage.

Abnormal discharge from the nipple: This discharge is a liquid coming out of the nipple without pressing or squeezing it. Ask yourself ‘Is this normal with me?’ If the answer is NO, schedule an appointment with a breast cancer doctor.

Constant pain: This pain is a dull ache in the spoken area. This is not necessarily a sign of breast cancer and may be a result of hormonal changes or an ill-fitted bra. However, if the pain persists it is advisable to seek medical advice from a breast cancer specialist.

Remember, these signs do not necessarily mean a malignancy is present. It could be an indication of a benign condition such as cyst or infection. But do not leave anything to chance!

What next?
