Tongue cancer is a type of oral cancer, where a part of front or sides of the tongue observes the abnormal growth of cancerous cells. The most common type of cancer cells that grow on tongue are of Squamous cell carcinoma

Symptoms

1) A lump or swollen patch in tongue (of reddish color)

2) A chronic sore inside the mouth

3) Pain in whole of tongue and mouth

4) Difficulty or pain in swallowing

8) Redding or whitening of the tongue

9) Hoarse or impaired voice

Causes

3) Excessive sun exposure to the lips.

4) Human Papillomavirus (HPV) (Sexually transmitted type)

Surgery – Best for early stage treatment

Transoral surgery. Surgery conducted to remove part of the tongue affected by cancer using specific tools or lasers.

Transoral robotic surgery. A type of robotic surgery that offers better chances of recovery and is completely safe.

Open surgery: In cases where cancer cell has spread to other parts and runs deep down in the throat. A part of the neck is removed to operate on cancer.

Sentinel node biopsy: Another advanced stage surgery, which is conducted to determine the spread of cancer in the lymph nodes.

Reconstructive surgery – It is suggested for cases where the tumor has resulted in disfigurement in the head, face, or jaw in order to restore the appearance of the patient.

Radiation Therapy

High-intensity X-rays directed to the part affected by the disease. Radiation waves target cancerous cells with accuracy and precision to achieve complete recovery.

Chemotherapy

Use of anticancer drugs to kill the cancerous cells present in the body. It is best suited for patients with higher stages of cancer.
