As the name rightly suggests, this cancer affects the functioning and production of blood cells. It initiates in the bone marrow which is the main source of blood production. The stem cells in the bone marrow grow into three types of cells - RBCs, WBCs and Platelets. The process is interrupted due to the growth of an abnormal type of blood cell.
It is most likely to affect the people who are over the age of 55 years but is also the most common cancer for people aged less than 15 years. Blood cancer is of three types -

Causes
Though the fixed cause of blood cancer is not yet determined but various factors are associated with its onset. Some of them are -

Symptoms
Blood cancer is a kind of disease which affects the blood, bone marrow or the lymphatic system. Some common signs of blood cancer are -
1. Bleeding in the gums and nose.
2. Sweating during night.
3. Excessive bruising and weight loss
4. Pain in abdomen, bone and back.
5. Reduced urination and difficulty while urinating.
6. Lumps or abdominal distension due to enlarged abdominal organs.
7. Weakness, shortness of breath and fatigue.
8. Continuous infections or fever.
9. Headaches along with the visual difficulties.
Risk Factors
Some factors increase the risk of developing blood cancer. Here are some of the known factors for developing the disease -

3. Certain Blood Disorders like Aplastic Anaemia
4. Benzene and other petrochemicals
5. Chemotherapy agents used in treating previous cancers.

It is also suggested that the exposure to electromagnetic energy may be linked to leukemia but there is not enough evidence to prove this.
