Debunking myths about brain cancer

Brain tumor - a mere mention of this word makes one feel insecure and, scared. One of the major reasons for these type of reactions is the myths associated with brain tumor. There are some brain tumor cancer myths that are particularly widespread. Here, Cancer Healer Center debunks some of the popular ones that have been frequently asked about.

Myth 1: Brain tumors are very rare

Fact: Brain tumors are not rare, but are relatively uncommon. There are only a few people who reach out for proper healthcare facilities and seek brain cancer treatment. In the past, it was believed that brain tumors were rare owing to the lack of good technology and facilities - to identify and determine them. But now with the advent of MRI and CT scan - it is easier to diagnose brain tumors.

Myth 2: Changes in lifestyle can prevent brain tumor

Fact: The best cancer doctors in India say that lifestyle modifications cannot actually prevent brain tumors, but are good for other health concerns and well-being of the individual. In fact, proper diet, regular exercise, and avoiding consumption of unhealthy diet are general parameters for attaining ideal health.

Myth 3: The brain tumor symptoms are the same for all patients.

Fact: The answer is NO. All brain tumor patients will not necessarily have the same signs and symptoms, however, there might be some common signs. The tumor in the brain may expand inside the head and raise the pressure inside the skull but in some cases this might not happen. The common symptoms of brain tumor are persistent headaches, vomiting, and dizziness. The other symptoms which depend on the location of the tumor are seizures, weakness, loss of vision, speech, and loss of balance.

Myth 4: Hair coloring can cause brain cancer

Fact: It’s true that hair color formulations consist of chemicals which are harmful for health and cause a higher incidence of certain cancers. But there is no conclusive evidence that proves such a correlation. Many studies have even denied any association between brain cancer and personal use of hair coloring products.

Myth 5: Radiation from cell phones can result in brain tumor

Fact: Excessive exposure to radiations like X-rays, atomic radiation, and ionizing radiation is known to induce tumors such as brain tumor. Though there have been multiple discussions about the usage of cell phones and their radiation leading to brain tumor, there is no proper evidence to validate such a notion.

Myth 6: Young people cannot get brain tumors

Fact: Age is no consideration because even the newborns can have brain tumors, however, in the extreme age, brain tumors become more malignant.

Myth 7: Brain tumors cannot develop again

Fact: This is not true. Benign tumors removed by surgery rarely develop again except for a few cases wherein they may recur even after 10-15 years. However, after brain tumor treatment such as surgery, regular follow ups with the surgeon are necessary to rule out the recurrence of brain tumors.

Early diagnosis and brain cancer treatment can ensure better results. With the advancements in the brain cancer treatment, even the most malicious patients are able to survive and live for years without experiencing even a trace of tumor years after surgery.
