The liver filters blood and converts nutrients into chemicals. It performs several functions such as removal of toxins and other wastes from the bloodstream and readies them for excretion. Since all the blood passes through the liver, it becomes infected with the cancer cells that are present in the bloodstream. The liver can be affected by cancer in two ways- primary liver cancer which forms in the liver itself and metastatic or secondary liver cancer which begins in another part of the body and later spreads to the liver. Most cases of liver cancer are secondary in nature.
Since different kinds of cells make up the liver, it can be affected with several kinds of tumors of which some are benign, i.e. noncancerous while others are cancerous and spread to the other parts of the body.
Types of liver cancer-

Hemochromatosis and Hepatitis B and C can result in lasting damage or failure of the liver.
