Avoiding the risk factors and increasing prophylactic measures can help prevent cancer. When we talk about oral health, most of us are focused on avoiding cavities or bad breath. We don’t really think about steps to prevent oral cancers. The best oral cancer hospitals in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, etc say that there is relatively low awareness about these cancers - including how to prevent and recognize them. Oral cancers are not easy to spot. There’s a big reason why these cancers often go undiagnosed until the later stages, after they have spread to the lymph nodes.

Facts about Oral Cancer

Here are a few important things to know about oral cavity cancer:

  •  Men are twice as likely to be diagnosed with oral cancer as women.
  • The number of patients under 50 years has been steadily increasing.
  • Patients who survive a first encounter with the disease have a higher risk of developing a second, related cancer. That increased risk can last for 5 to 10 years.
  • Several types of cancers can be found in one small area of the body, each type has different causes and treatments.

Tips to prevent and manage oral cancer

Conduct a self-exam at least once a month: You can do your self-exam at home itself. It takes only a few minutes of your time, but can make a huge difference in your life. If you see or feel anything suspicious lumps, bumps, tender areas, white, red or grey patches, see your dentist to have it checked.

Quit smoking: The longer you have used tobacco and the more often you use, the higher the risk of mouth and oral cancers. Both smoking and smokeless tobacco play a major role in causing these cancers. When placed directly in the mouth, it can create gray-white ulcers which can become cancerous.

Eat fruits and veggies: A lack of nutrients can lead to the changes in your mouth which can make cancer more likely. However, proper intake of vitamins and antioxidants can boost the immune system and protect you. Carrots, sprouts, brussels are good for your mouth.

Maintain good oral hygiene: Brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day because it’s good for oral health. Leading cancer doctors offer oral cancer treatment say that it lowers the chances of oral cancer, however more research is required.

Make sure the dentures fit well: Dentures which do not fit well or are sharp can irritate your mouth and raise your odds for oral cancer. It’s recommended to make sure your dentures fit well and that any dental work you have done isn’t bothering your mouth.

Use sun protection: High exposure to sun doesn’t just raise the chances of skin cancer but also a problem for the lips. If you can, stay out of direct sunlight in the middle of the day. When you do go out, wear a hat that shades your whole face. Use lip balm with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15, and put it on often.
