This century has been the era of Antioxidants. We hear, feel, eat and apply antioxidants in every product these days. Marketing agencies have focussed on these compounds to such an extent that even children learnt to spell the word with ease. So, what is the fuss about Antioxidants? Experts believe that antioxidants that can prevent as well as fight cancer. The body produces free radicals. It is normal to produce some amount of free radicals, but an increase in the number of these compounds they are harmful. Stress, environmental pollution, chemical, exposure to radiation all cause increase in the free radicals in the body. These harm the healthy cell in the body and can cause cancer growth in the body. Antioxidants are free radical scavengers. These reduce the number of free radicals in the body thus protecting the body from the damage these cause. Body has its own production of antioxidant but primarily depend diet for antioxidants. Green leafy vegetables, fruits, soy products and whole grains provide antioxidants in diet.

Which foods help in increase in antioxidant intake in diet? Dietician recommend eating dark rich coloured fruits like watermelon and strawberries for their lycopene content in breakfast. Blueberries, pomegranates, beetroots, jamuns, phalase are deep purple produce and very rich in antioxidants. Tomatoes are rich in lycopene and should be consumed cooked in plenty especially for patients with lung cncear.

  • Beta carotene and lutein are found in good amount in green leafy vegetables, so spinach, fenugreek, amaranth, turnip greens and more should be a part of daily diet.
  • Eat Amla (Indian gooseberry), grapefruit for good Vit c intake.
  • Sprouts and soy products form a very healthy diet.
  • Vit E is found in wheat germ, olive oil and all fortified oil products.

Should antioxidant supplementation be considered? It is known that antioxidants interfere with certain cancer therapy. So, if you are already taking some of cancer treatment, kindly consult your medical practitioner before considering antioxidant supplementation.
