Breast cancer is a widely misunderstood disease. With more than thousands of cases each year, there is unlimited information available on the internet often making it difficult to differentiate between facts and myths. This not only leaves the family, friends, and patients confused and open to misleading information, but also ready for dangerous treatments and cures at worst. Hence, Cancer Healer Center, a premier hospital for breast cancer treatment debunks myths about breast cancer. Have a look:
Myth: Having a family history of cancer implies you ‘WILL’ have breast cancer.
Fact: A family history of breast cancer does not mean you will definitely have breast cancer, it just increases the risk. According to research by top breast cancer treatment hospitals, only 5-10% of cancer cases are caused by genetic mutations and the remaining are a result of one’s individual lifestyle and environment. So, even if you don’t have a family history, you should be aware that you can still get breast cancer.
Myth: There is nothing you can do to lower the risk of breast cancer.
Fact: This is not true. Top hospitals offering treatment for breast cancer in India state that lifestyle and environmental factors can have a major impact on breast cancer risk. In order to lower the risk of cancer, one should maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly, and avoid the intake of alcohol.
Myth: Breast implants increase the risk of cancer.
Fact: The simple answer is No. There is no proof which supports the claims of breast implants linked to breast cancer. In 2011, complaints were made about a particular type of implant called PIP which was later banned. They contained a type of silicone gel which isn’t approved for medical use. However, findings from researchers around the world have so far have been reassuring and studies have found that no ingredients in PIP implants cause cancer proving the myth to be baseless.
Myth: Bras can cause breast cancer.
Fact: Underwire bras do not cause cancer. Researchers looked at the link between breast cancer and wearing a bra but there wasn’t any. Therefore, you shouldn’t be concerned with the risks of breast cancer linked with wearing any type of
Myth: All lumps mean breast cancer
Fact: If you find a lump during self-breast examination or routine exam, it might not necessarily be cancer. Many lumps are caused by cysts or scar tissue. Some other warning signs of breast cancer include pain, swelling, redness or thickening of the skin. It is always suggested to discuss any breast changes with your doctor.
Myth: Deodorants cause breast cancer
Fact: The answer is NO. This idea has gained unjustified popularity and is based on the fact that any substance near or on the breast increases the chances of cancer. The top breast cancer treatment hospitals and research centers have not found any evidence that deodorants, antiperspirants, or cosmetics are related to breast cancer. All said, other experts note that there is not sufficient evidence either way and suggest further research trials.
