Human bodies are made up of millions of cells. Old cells die while new cells grow in their place. This is a natural phenomenon and ensures that the body can maintain its natural function. However, sometimes this natural cycle of cell rejuvenation goes awry. Old cells refuse to die while cell multiplication also takes place at a faster rate. This phenomenon is called cancer. In other words, it is the mutation of healthy cells into malignant ones.
Every day, scientists are developing new drugs for successful treatment of cancer. Although, there is no full-fledged cure of cancer, but with drugs, surgeries and/or chemotherapy, cancerous cells can be eliminated from the body. However, there is still a chance that it might relapse. Thankfully, scientists are developing a way that can help the immune system to remember how to fight the disease if it comes back through Immunotherapy.
Understanding Immunotherapy
Cancer Immunotherapy is a special kind of cancer treatment that boosts the body's natural defences to fight cancer. This is one of a kind of therapy that improves or restores immune system function without any alternate effects.
Cancer Immunotherapy May Work By:
- Stopping or slowing the growth of cancer cells
- Stopping cancer from spreading to other parts of the body
- Helping the immune system work better at destroying existing cancer cells
Role of Exercise in Cancer Immunotherapy Treatment
Exercise has a role to play in boosting immunotherapy. Immunotherapy today has become quite sophisticated. Adding exercise to your cancer treatment can be quite helpful. However, the amount of exercise is the key. The right amount at the right time can make cancer immunotherapy treatments more effective. The reason has probably to do with blood flow delivery and oxygen in tumour-related cancer. Tumours contain areas of low oxygen (termed hypoxia), which make them more likely to metastasize. Exercise may solve this issue by increasing the amount of blood flow to the tumour, thereby resulting in better oxygenation of the tumour. Several preclinical studies have shown that exercise can reduce the tumour growth across a range of tumour models.
What Kind of Exercise Is Beneficial?
Each person’s exercise program is unique and should be based on what is safe and works for that person. Your goal should be to maintain endurance, strength and flexibility and to keep you able to do the things you want to do. There may be times when you don’t feel able to exercise. The goal is to be as active as you comfortably can be.
