Breast cancer in men is a rare issue. Since they have breast tissue, they can get breast cancer. A little less than 1% of all breast cancers are cases of breast cancer in men, and only one in a thousand men are diagnosed with breast cancer.

It is usually detected as a hard lump under the nipple and areola. Some men are not aware that they can get breast cancer and may not notice a change or not see it as important. Also, they may be embarrassed about a change in their breast or chest area and put off seeing a doctor resulting in a delay in diagnosis.

Warning Signs for Breast Cancer in Men

Any changes in the chest area, breast, or nipple can be a warning sign of breast cancer in men. Here are some signs and symptoms which one should not ignore:

  • Lump, hard knots or thickening in the breast in the chest or underarm area. These may be painless but may be tender.
  • Dimpling, redness or wrinkles on the skin of the breast.
  • Itchy, rashes or scaly sores on the nipples.
  • Change in the size or shape of the breast.
  • Pulling in of the nipple or inverted nipples or other parts of the breast.
  • Nipple discharge though it is rare if you notice any of the warning signs or changes in the chest, breast or nipple, see a doctor right away.

Causes for Breast Cancer in Men

The exact causes of breast cancer in men is not fully understood but there are a few factors which are known to increase the risk such as:

Age

The most important factor in breast cancer for men is increasing age. Most men who are diagnosed with breast cancer are above 60, though younger men can be affected too.

Family history

A small number of men may have an increased risk of developing cancer due to significant family history. This may be due to the fact that an inherited altered gene increases the risk of breast cancer in the family.

The most rampant altered genes which increase the risk of breast cancer are called BRCA1 and BRCA2. BRCA2 is commonly associated with breast cancer in men. If you have inherited the altered gene, your risk of developing breast cancer increases, but the total increased risk of breast cancer in men is still less than women in the general population.

If you have children or planning to have, they will have chances of inheriting the altered gene too. If you’re concerned about your family history, the first step is to talk to your practitioner.
