Organic food is one of the purest forms grown without pesticides and herbicides. These chemicals are used to kill the pests and weed so food grown without these is considered better. But when it comes to decreasing the risk of cancer, the answer that eating organic food makes a difference is not clear.

According to a research dietician Erma Levy, “Eating organic foods can reduce your risk of ingesting commercially produced pesticides and chemicals but the evidence that exists to support or refute eating organic foods to prevent cancer is unclear.”

There is no evidence that organic foods are better off than conventionally grown food for reducing cancer risk. However, what we do know is that adopting a healthy lifestyle and eating a wide range of nutritious foods can reduce the risk of cancer.

However, if you are still concerned about the safety of food, cancer specialists in Mumbai listed down a few tips:

1. Wash your fruits and vegetables thoroughly: Cleaning your fruits and vegetables can remove bacteria, dirt and chemicals from the surface. Rub them gently under running water to remove dirt. There is no specific time that you should clean your food for. You also can peel fruits and vegetables, but you might lose some fibre and nutrients.

2. Is eating organic completely healthy?: Many research and cancer specialists in Mumbai claim that many packaged or processed food labeled as organic can be high in calories, fat, and sugar. One should look at the nutrition labels and try to avoid foods with artificial ingredients. If organics give you a sense of confidence in your personal food choices and excite you about eating vegetables and fruits, organics are a good choice for you.

3. Information on pesticide levels in food: You can find information on the pesticide levels in products. This can help you decide which organics to buy, and which non-organic fruits and vegetables are safer choices.

4. Read the products carefully: Labels are placed on the foods with information on how the food is grown and processed. It is important for all organic foods to meet government standards. You can look for the following claims on the packet:

  • 100% organic: All ingredients are organic.
  • Organic: At least 95% of the ingredients are organic.
  • Made with organic ingredients: At least 70% of the ingredients are organic.

Hence, fruits and vegetables are essential for our bodies to stay healthy. They constitute an important part of a well-balanced meal. So no single fruit or vegetable can protect you from cancer making it important to get a variety of them in your daily diet. As rightly said by Levy, "The more colourful your plate, the more health benefits you’ll receive from eating the rainbow,"
