Anal cancer, a rare cancer occur when cells begin to grow abnormally in:
- The anus: the opening to the outside of the body at the end of the large intestine, below the rectum
- The anal canal: the inch-and-a-half of tube inside the body which connects anus to the rectum
Most anal cancers are squamous cell cancers- a type of cell that line the surface of the anal canal.

Anal cancer is a disease in which malignant cells form in the tissues of the anus: The anus is the end of the large intestine below the rectum. Possible signs of anal cancer are bleeding from the anus or rectum or a lump: These and other signs may be caused by anal cancer. However, other conditions may cause the same signs. Consult a doctor if any of the following problems occur:
Bleeding from the anus or rectum
Itching or discharge from the anus
A lump near the anus
A change in bowel habits
Pain or pressure in the area around anus
