Anal cancer, a rare cancer occur when cells begin to grow abnormally in:

  1. The anus: the opening to the outside of the body at the end of the large intestine, below the rectum
  2. The anal canal: the inch-and-a-half of tube inside the body which connects anus to the rectum

Most anal cancers are squamous cell cancers- a type of cell that line the surface of the anal canal.

Anal cancer is a disease in which malignant cells form in the tissues of the anus: The anus is the end of the large intestine below the rectum. It is formed partly from the outer, skin layers of the body and partly from the intestine. The skin around the outside of the anus is called the perianal area. Tumors in this area are skin tumors, not anal cancer. 

Being infected with HPV can affect the risk of developing anal cancer: The exact causes of anal cancer are still not well understood, but there are certain risk factors which increase the risk:

-Being older than 50 years

-Multiple sexual partners

-Having receptive anal intercourse

-Abnormal openings and frequent redness, swelling, and soreness

-Smoking

Women are more likely to get anal cancer: Hundreds of people are diagnosed with anal cancer. However, women are more likely to get anal cancer than men are. Researchers have said that African-Americans are more likely than European Americans to develop the disease. Among African-Americans, men are more likely to get this type of cancer than women are.

Possible signs of anal cancer are bleeding from the anus or rectum or a lump: These and other signs may be caused by anal cancer. However, other conditions may cause the same signs. Consult a doctor if any of the following problems occur:

Bleeding from the anus or rectum

Itching or discharge from the anus

A lump near the anus

A change in bowel habits

Pain or pressure in the area around anus
