HRT is a therapy that is used when estrogen and progesterone levels drop in women during menopause. This therapy gives relief from symptoms faced during menopause like:
Ø Vaginal dryness
Ø Irregular periods
Ø Urinary problems
Ø Accretion of fat in the abdomen
Ø Urinary problems etc.
Types of HRT:
There are around 50 different preparations of HRT, the three main types include:
Ø Oestrogen only HRT: It is usually given to women whose womb is removed.
Ø Cyclical HRT: It is given to women who have menopausal symptoms but still get their periods.
Ø Combined HRT: It is given to women who are post- menopausal.
The use of this therapy has major side effects. It can results in:
Ø Heart diseases
Ø Blood clots
Ø Strokes
Ø Cancers like breast cancer, womb cancer and ovarian cancer
Breast cancer:
The risk of developing breast cancer increases for women who have been using combined HRT for a long period of time. The risk decreases as the consumption of HRT is stopped.
Womb cancer:
The risk of cancer increases for women who takes oestrogen only HRT. However according to few studies the risk of cancer decreases when combined HRT is taken. More days per month when woman uses progesterone, as part of combined HRT, has less chances of womb cancer.
Very little research is done in this area as ovarian cancer is not common. The risk of cancer increases when estrogen and progestin is taken after menopause.
Other cancers associated with HRT are lung cancer, colorectal cancer and skin cancer.
HRT should be taken after doctor’s consultation, weighing up the pros and cons of the type of HRT required. You can reduce the cancer risk of hormone therapy by:
Ø Reducing the amount of medication you take by going for the lowest effective dose for a short period of time.
Ø Visit your doctor regularly if you are taking HRT to find out that the effect of HRT does not outweigh the risk of cancer.
Ø Exercise regularly and avoid excess alcohol and quit smoking.
HRT is neither all good nor all bad, it has got its pros and cons. So if you are planning to start or stop HRT, you should do more research about the same and consult the doctor.
