What is Formaldehyde?
It is a colorless, flammable and a pungent gas. It is used in many manufacturing Industries, Chemical Industries and industries that make building materials and products used in household products. It is also used to make walls, wooden cabinets as well as furniture.
Sources of Formaldehyde
- Combustion contributes a colossal amount of formaldehyde in the environment
- A tiny amount is produced naturally by Plants, Humans and Animals.
- Emission by Power Plants and Manufacturing Facilities
- Automobile exhausts
- Building Materials
- Smoke of Tobacco
How Formaldehyde enters my body?
- Inhalation (Breathing Air)
- Ingestion (Through Food and Water)
How it leaves my body?
On entering, formaldehyde breaks itself into small components that either comes out through urine or along with carbon dioxide when your breath out. The main concern are those components of formaldehyde which doesn’t find a way out of your body.
Does Formaldehyde cause cancer?
- Some studies revealed that areas exposed to a high quantity of Formaldehyde found more cases of throat and nose cancer.
- The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) have stated Formaldehyde as Human carcinogen (which cause cancer).
Diagnosing
Formaldehyde can be detected with either a blood test or a urine test.
How to avoid the exposure to formaldehyde?
- Avoid smoking. Especially inside a room or a packed space.
- Keep a proper ventilation in the house.
- Spend most of the time outside. Especially if you have Asthma.
- Make sure to bring fresh air inside while using insecticides or any other cleaning products.
- If you feel trouble in breathing then consult an oncologist without any due.
