Stomach Cancer - An Overview

Stomach, or gastric cancer, is a tumor that arises in the lining of the stomach. Stomach Cancers, are classified, by the type of tissue where they originate. The most common is adenocarcinoma, which starts in the glandular tissue of the stomach. Other forms may include lymphomas, involving the lymphatic system and sarcomas, which involve the connective tissue, like the muscle, fat or blood vessels. Stomach cancer, may be curable, if found and rectified at an early stage. However, the prospect is poor, if the cancer is found at an advanced or a later stage. The causes of stomach cancer can be varied, but some known factors, predominantly increase the risk and incidence of the disease, like:-

• Gender: - Men are more prone to this than women are.
• Genetic abnormalities, and some inherited cancer systems, increase your exposure to stomach cancer.
• Blood group a type, individuals, is at increased risk.
• Age bracket of occurrence is usually 70-74 years.
• Family history of gastric cancer increases the risk significantly almost 2-3 times.
• Lifestyle habits, such as smoking, or drinking alcohol more particularly, alcohol in this case, which dehydrates your system, and produces toxins in the body.
• A poor diet, low in fruits and vegetables, and high in salted, smoked or nitrate rich meats, increases your risk of stomach cancer.
• Some health complications like gastritis, pernicious anemia, polyps, and stomach surgery.
• Work related causes, like exposure to coal mining fumes, nickel refining and rubber and wood processing, as well as exposure to asbestos.

Symptoms:- As is sadly the case, for most cancers, symptoms do not show up in the first stage of the disease, and often only occur in the later stages of the disease, by which time, unfortunately it is too late. Hence, any form of the below symptoms should never be ignored, and always checked out, by an expert, who can determine and tell you what you are suffering from.

• Stomach discomfort, and continuous indigestion.
• Bloat.
• Nausea.
• Appetite loss.
• Heartburn.

These symptoms, are so easily confused, with those caused by peptic ulcers, that people take them for granted, and do not get themselves checked out.  Before it moves to the next couple of stages, stomach cancer, grows very large in size. Advanced stage symptoms include:-

• Upper or middle abdomen pain and discomfort.
• Blood in the stool, black or discolored stool.
• Vomiting up blood.
• Immediate pain after a meal.
• Weakness and fatigue.

Stomach cancer, like all other forms of cancer, requires immediate treatment, and attention. Not attending to any of the above symptoms, can mean, that you will ultimately progress into a later stage of the disease, by which time, treatment progress will be slow, or even futile.
