The primary cause behind skin cancer is too much exposure of sun rays. Because ultraviolet (UV) rays are present around the year irrespective of the season, it is advised not to put sunscreen away in winter. Here is why one should not expose his or her skin too much to the winter sun.
1. Skin cancer risk increases with an increase in altitude: At high altitudes, UV rays are more intense and this intensity of UV rays makes it even more harmful. At the same high altitude, the atmosphere is thin and the thin atmosphere does not block any sun’s harmful rays, therefore, it increases the risk of sunburn.
2. Even cloudy days damage your skin: If there are clouds in the sky during the season of Jack Frost then it doesn’t mean that you are not under the exposure of UV rays. Even through dark and fluffy clouds, UV rays reach Earth surface and damages your skin tissues. In fact, some of the studies show that clouds enhance the effect of UV radiation on the skin.
To enjoy the winter sun safely, adopt these good habits in your routine.
• Wear sunscreen lotion that is at least SPF 30.
• Apply sunscreen lotion 30 minutes before going outside.
• For people with sensitive skin, use sunscreen lotion that contains zinc oxide.
• Cover yourself up with long sleeves, jacket, gloves and hat
• Cover your eyes with shades.
• Go to an expert for a regular skin cancer screening test.
Fact: Take an extra care of your skin between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. for this is the time when the UV rays are strongest.
