Thyroid cancer is a rare type of cancer which affects the thyroid gland, a small gland which is placed at the base of the neck. In simple terms, it is the uncontrolled growth of cells in the thyroid gland which can spread to areas around the gland and other parts of the body. Thyroid cancer can affect people of all ages but most patients are cured by the treatments now available.

Types of Thyroid Cancer

There are mainly four types of thyroid cancer as listed below:

  1. Papillary Carcinoma: This is the most common type of cancer affecting people under the age of 40 and accounting for 60% of the cases.
  2. Follicular Carcinoma: It comes up to around 3 out of 20 cases of thyroid cancer and tends to affect older adults.
  3. Medullary thyroid carcinoma: This thyroid cancer comes between 5 and 8 out of every 100 diagnosed cases. Unlike the other kinds of thyroid cancer, medullary carcinoma can run in families.
  4. Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma: This is the rarest and unusual type of thyroid cancer accounting for less than 1 in 20 thyroid cancer cases. It affects people over the age of 60.

Fact: Papillary Carcinoma and Follicular Carcinoma are sometimes called as differentiated thyroid cancers and are often treated in the same way.

1. Women are at Higher Risk

Women form 75% of the thyroid cancer cases but the exact reason is not known. However, few cancer doctors claim a correlation between the high risk of thyroid cancer for women between puberty and menopause years but have no concrete results with it doing anything with the hormones. A few other studies suggest that estrogen plays a role for both malignant and benign thyroid cells, further suggesting gender plays a big role in the occurrence of thyroid cancer though more research is required to make the claim solid.

2. Symptoms

The most common symptoms of thyroid are lumps or swelling over thyroid or fullness in the lower neck, consistent cough for longer periods and signs of cold, neck pain, especially in the front of the neck which can radiate to the ears, hoarseness in the voice which is persistent for more than a month, difficulty in swallowing, and trouble in breathing or shortness of breath sometimes.

3. Risk factors

The major risk factors for thyroid cancer include:-

  • Gender: Women have more risk of developing cancer than men.
  • History of exposure to radiation: Exposure to radiation as a child increases the risk.
  • Iodine deficiency: The risk of thyroid cancer is high if the diet is low in mineral iodine.
  • Family History: The chances can increase if the family has had a history of thyroid cancer.
  • Age: It can occur at any age but is more common in younger individuals who have thyroid nodules.

4. Diagnosis of Thyroid Cancer

If an individual is suspected of a mass or nodule, he/she is usually evaluated by an endocrinologist. The doctor will carry out an ultrasound on the neck or thyroid area and identify if a nodule is present. It plays a major role in determining where and how a biopsy is obtained after localizing a thyroid nodule. A physician may also conduct the following exams:

  • Neck Exam
  • Ultrasound
  • Blood Tests
  • Needle Biopsy
  • CT scan or other imaging tests though rarely

If a nodule is detected, the cancer doctor recommends a thyroid cancer treatment based on individual condition.

Prevention of thyroid cancer: There is no one way of preventing thyroid cancer. Some people with thyroid cancer have unknown risk factors which make it impossible to prevent the diseases in a number of cases. However, exposure of significant radiation to the neck is identified as a major risk factor so avoid exposure to the same. Researchers recommend limiting smoking, controlling diabetes, increasing the intake of iodine.

6. Thyroid Cancer Treatment

Thyroid cancer treatment depends on the type of cancer, whether the cancer has spread or not, the results of your tests, the age and general health. Cancer Healer Therapy by Cancer Healer Center is a leading treatment available for thyroid cancer. It works by stimulating the immune system of the body to fight and prevent cancer for reappearing.  The immunology cancer treatment brings significant improvements in patients during the advance stages and can be given to the patient along with chemotherapy or radiation therapy without any interference. It even helps patients to combat the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

7. Self-advisable is easy and recommended

The best cancer doctors in India highly recommend self-detecting. They say to feel for Adam’s apple in the neck and slide the fingers until you feel the next prominent cartilage. Then place your fingers on either side of that prominence (just above the notch at the base of the neck) and swallow. If you have a problem, you should be able to feel lumps. Don't wait-see a doctor, fast.

How effective is Cancer Healer Therapy in thyroid cancer treatment?
