What is Multiple Myeloma?
Multiple myeloma is the second most common type of blood cancer that starts in the plasma cells of the bone marrow. When plasma cells become cancerous and grow out of control, they produce a tumor. If someone has only a single plasma cell tumor, the disease is called solitary plasmacytoma or if someone has more than one plasmacytoma, it is called multiple myeloma.
What are the Risk Factors?
Risk factors associated with Multiple Myeloma are:
· Age: More common in elderly people.
· Gender: Males are more likely to get multiple myeloma than female.
· Family History: Someone with a family history of multiple myeloma is 4 times more likely to develop it.
· Few other plasma cell diseases like solitary plasmacytoma or Monoclonoal gamopathy are associated with high risk for developing multiple myeloma.
What are the Symptoms?
· Pain in bones and they become prone to fracture
· Kidney problem.
· Frequent urination
· Feeling drowsy and weakness.
How is it diagnosed?
It is diagnosed by various methods such as:
· Blood Tests
· Bone marrow Biopsy
· Imaging
· B-2 Microgobulin
· Serum and urine electrophoresis
